The Columns Gallery
Gallery Assistant

Founded in 1994 in New York and now based in Seoul, The Columns Gallery has since expanded to Singapore, strengthening its focus on promoting Southeast Asian artists to a broader audience. I spent four months as a gallery assistant at the Gillman Barracks space, where I managed day-to-day operations and handled much of the administrative work. I regularly welcomed visitors, introduced them to the exhibitions, and wrote and designed posters, press releases, and pamphlets. I also supported the director with curatorial decisions—from selecting works to planning their placement—and oversaw three exhibitions during my time there.

Eko Nugroho Solo Exhibition at The Columns Gallery

Eko Nugroho Solo Exhibtion

When I joined The Columns Gallery, preparations for the Eko Nugroho exhibition were already in full swing. I quickly became involved, taking on the marketing and press efforts while also handling day-to-day visitor engagement in the gallery. One of my key contributions was writing the press release, which helped shape how the exhibition was introduced to the public.

Teo Eng Seng: 50 Years of Defying the Norm

For the Teo Eng Seng: 50 Years of Defying the Norm exhibition, I took on a mix of roles. I worked with various teams to organise photography and handled the planning for the exhibition opening. I also visited the artist’s studio to help select the works for display, and designed the exhibition poster (click to take a look). My time at The Columns Gallery gave me a real look into the inner workings of running a gallery, and the hands-on experience of taking on so many roles left me with valuable skills such as visitor engagement, curatorial writing, and artwork handling.
